Research
TTE in conjunction with the Department of Primary
Industries, AQIS and Serve-Ag research has developed a rigorous
certification program to ensure that all trees that are to be used will be
infected with just Tuber melanosporum. This is a first for the
industry in Australia, setting a very high standard in certification to
ensure the quality of production in years to come will be true to type.
There have been undesirabe species of truffles found on trees coming from
other nurseries, so we have developed a high standard operating procedure
and installed a new nursery facility on the “Needlesdale” property for the
infection of the trees which will ensure the quality, and auditable
assurity that our trees are actually what we say they are when leaving the
nursery.
Tasmanian Truffle Enterprises in conjunction with the Department of Primary Industries, AQIS Tasmania and Serve-Ag research also based in Tasmania has developed a rigorous certification program to ensure that all trees that are to be used will be infected with just Black Truffle (Tuber melanosporum). This is a first for the industry in Australia, setting a very high standard in certification to ensure the quality of production in years to come will be true to type.
Tasmanian Truffle Enterprises has done 13 years continuous research on production methods for black truffles in the field on many plantations in Tasmania and on mainland Australia.
Some of the things we have researched are;
- Irrigation parameters for the different growth stages of the black truffle in Tasmania. This has proved difficult to master given there are so many unknowns in Australian and Tasmanian soils and climate, but we generally believe we are now beginning to understand the whole picture on irrigation scheduling, especially conditions in Tasmania.
- Soil conditioning and site selection is probably the greatest research trials we have done, and we can now proceed with confidence when looking at the soils on potential sites around Australia. We have been working closely with SWEP laboratories in Victoria with soil sampling techniques and resultant data over many years, taking all tests from Tasmania and the mainland producing plantations to use in our data banks.
- Fertilizer trials to improve production. Whilst these have all been done in Tasmania, the results are relevant to all soils.
- Cloning of trees to find the best genetic material for our plantations.
- Electronic nose for truffle detection.
- Pruning techniques to achieve optimum production in Tasmania
- Plant spacing to achieve optimum production.
